This company was started in 1878 by Gerhard Diederich Wilhelm Wemp, a watchmaker in Elsfleth on Weser. In about 1907, the company moved to Hamburg and by 1914 they had 5 shops.
During 1921 Gerhard’s son, Herbert, inherited the business and by 1925, the now distinctive WEMPE logo had been introduced.
In 1939, on the eve of the second world war, he also purchased the Hamburg ‘Chronometer Works’. After the war the company was almost destroyed.
By 1953, the company had again built up to 5 shops, with it’s headquarters in Hamburg. Herbert died in 1963 and the company passed to Hellmut Wemp.
Helmut’s daughter, Kim-Eva, joined the company in 1984 and is now the co-owner.
The company is still trading today (2002) and are agents for Audemars Piguet, Blancpain, Breguet, Cartier, IWC, Jaeger-LeCoultre, Lange, Patek Philippe and Rolex watches. At this time they are mainly retail jewellers and they have 25 branches including, London, New York, Paris, Hamburg, Berlin, Frankfurt, Vienna and Madrid.
