FORTIS means "strong"; during the more than 80 years since the foundation of the company in the year of 1912, FORTIS has proven its strength: innovation spirits were the basis for always new, creative special performances.  Again and again technological challenges were faced.

As the first producer in the world for a series of automatic wrist watches, the company famous in the fifties, and today, the trade-mark FORTIS stands for precision and innovation of Swiss watch making skills.

A highlight of FORTIS company history occurs in the year of 1926.  The world first wristwatch in a series with automatic mechanism, the legendary HARWOOD, had its debut.  Special feature of the HARWOOD is the lack of the winding crown.  The adjustment of the hands is taken over by the fluted of the hands is taken over by the fluted lunette designed as a turning ring.

Through a special mechanism as structure to the automatic movement, built exactly in accordance with the original constructional drawings by John Harwood, the time is adjusted through turning on both sides. 

A red spot in the dial opening typical for the HARWOOD, above the "6", signals the readiness of the movement. The HARWOOD is one of the historical watch-technical realizations of our century and brought to FORTIS the recognition of the experts and a seat of honour among the small circle of quality watch brands.

Fortis Wrist Watches
The Fortis watch company has been well known for creating highly technical Fortis wrist watches and they originate from the place well known for it clock making, Switzerland. The Fortis watch factory was founded in 1912 in Grenchen, Switzerland. Fortis has the honour of producing the world first self-winding wrist watch series, the Harwood.
